Pedestrian and cycle bridge

Radolfzell, 2017 / 3rd prize

The bridge is located in the eastern section of the corridor in order to take account of the valuable tourist connection between the city center and the lakeside park. The bridge curves picturesquely over the railroad tracks. The layout of the bridge allows changing and exciting perspectives of the old town, lake and nature reserve. The structural design supports this panoramic character in that the load-bearing, and therefore closed, elements of the bridge sculpture are always arranged inside the bridge loops. This cross-section gives the bridge a clear orientation and the alternating play of the bridge edge creates an unusual and powerful experience when walking on the bridge. The bridge is designed as a steel box girder construction. The shape of the bridge cross-section follows the load and thus makes the load-bearing mechanisms visible. The lighting concept is based on the sculptural concept in that the permanent lighting of the bridge body on the inside of the loops emphasizes the "back". The more powerful lighting for pedestrians and cyclists is designed to move with the user, always illuminating the area that users need to walk safely on the bridge more brightly. This reduces the bridge's energy requirements and at the same time creates an exciting, random but not arbitrary lighting installation.
