Rossbollengässle quarter

Stuttgart, 2012

In the extremely densely built-up western part of Stuttgart, the City of Stuttgart owned some vacant plots inside a Wilhelminian-style building block. This offered the opportunity to work together with the residents to upgrade the inner area of the block known as Rossbollengässle. After intensive resident participation, a concept was developed that counteracts the main deficits in the west of Stuttgart: an underground garage with around 70 parking spaces creates additional parking space, while a terraced green area and a playground for the neighborhood were created on the roof of the garage. The spatially folded roof of the underground garage picks up on the existing topography and creates a surprising spatial experience. At the edges of the underground garage, daylight can enter the basement levels through elongated light slits.
