New secondary school building

Landshut, 2017 / Honorable Mention

The pedagogical concept of the departments creates a "school in motion" between lessons and requires a spatial concept of short distances. This design is based on a square building with a ring-shaped circulation system and an internal crossroads dividing it into four sections, each with its own identity. There are no corridor lanes in this school, only open and spatially interesting paths. In keeping with this approach, the sports hall is fully integrated into the school building. The building is given a differentiated yet rationally producible timber element façade, which gives the building an unmistakable character and incorporates all functional requirements between lighting, ventilation, adjustable sun protection and highly efficient thermal insulation. The element frame with its functional infill is prefabricated in the factory and is simply suspended, adjusted and fixed to the ceiling panels on site. This frame emerges as a sculptural element that structures the building and is joined according to the principles of constructive timber protection. The result is a façade that changes over the years, just like the building itself, but can do so without losing any of its value or design quality. Inside the building, robust but characterful materials predominate: Terrazzo in the assembly hall and circulation routes, waxed wood paneling on the corridor walls and light-colored ceilings.
