German Consulate General Russia

Ekaterinburg, 2009 / assignment / stopped after work phase 3

The new building for the German Consulate General is a simple and elegant natural stone cube that blends into a cleared area of the existing park. Its proportions and expression are reminiscent of a timelessly classic villa in the park, surrounded by individual birch trees. The black basalt of the building forms an attractive contrast to the white colors of the local birch trees. The floor plan of the consulate general, developed over three storeys, reconciles the high demands on function and representation while trying to avoid the impression of a conventional office building. The individual functional areas are combined into compact groups of rooms. The resulting blocks are freely arranged within the overall volume according to spatial-architectural and functional criteria. The resulting intermediate spaces create an attractive open sequence of rooms through all floors.
