In abstract terms, the aim of this design is to integrate the new campus of the University of Hamburg spatially into the city and, on the other hand, to make it recognizable as a separate urban quarter through the shape and orientation of the buildings. The independence of the campus quarter is achieved by the grain size of the buildings required for university use and the resulting network structure parallel to Grindelallee. Integration into the city is achieved by adapting the grid structure and buildings to the existing street alignments and incorporating the existing path and street connections of the surrounding neighborhoods. The resulting deviations from the hard grid and the overlapping of different structures create diverse spatial situations and anchor the area in the fabric of the city. The windmill-like staggering of the buildings creates a varied sequence of squares and pathways that clearly structure the campus.
