Cultural Center

Ahaus, 2012 / 3rd prize

The new town hall with library and restaurant stands as a precisely shaped solitary object in the urban space and is thus perceived as a constituent part of the cultural center of Ahaus. The tailor-made design of the polygonal structure integrates and positions this building precisely in the urban context and, together with the Protestant church, creates a new square that is perceived as the center of the cultural forum. Through the staggered juxtaposition of buildings and tree clusters, this square incorporates the Kulturforum, which extends to the north as far as the music school. All public areas of the building are accessed from the foyer, which is entered directly from the Kulturforum. The external appearance of the building is defined by the triad of materials: brick, white concrete and glass. While the brick ties in with the local building tradition, the sculpturally shaped white concrete roof lends the building a contemporary sculptural expression, making it clearly a cultural building.
