Pedestrian and cycle bridge

Lahr, 2012 / 3rd prize

The aim of the project is to respond to the complex geometric framework conditions of the task with a single clear design idea. A balance of proportions and simple elegance are to be given priority over a spectacular structural design. The ground plan of the bridge is part of an ellipse that is inscribed into the site in such a way that it links the two main directions (Mauerfeldpark and Stegmattenpark) and crosses the existing traffic routes in a generous sweep. The cross-section of the bridge body is asymmetrical, with support on the inside. The two railings are designed accordingly: a round bar railing is proposed on the outside of the bridge, while a closed parapet is designed on the inside. The tetrahedron-shaped piers taper to a point on the outside of the bridge and at the base of each pier.
