New accommodation for Dresden South Police Station

Dresden, 2025 / 2nd prize

The urban planning challenge of the construction task is to position the new building, taking into account the existing buildings in operation, in such a way that a sensible distribution of building mass is achieved on the site even after their demolition. The three-winged structure stretches its arms into the available areas of the site and can thus occupy the focal point of the plot. This makes it possible to give the new police station an appropriate presence on Niedersedlitzer Strasse and an attractive forecourt. The two southern wings of the building are offset to form an address-forming entrance forecourt for visitors to the building. The supporting structure is designed as a skeleton structure made of timber and concrete and follows a clear and consistent grid, which can be seen in the floor plan: The three wings of the building each have a central corridor. This zone is flanked on both sides by column axes. The ceiling width above the corridor measures just two meters and can be spanned with in-situ concrete only 14 cm thick.
