XLAB enables senior high school students to work in professional conditions for the subjects Biology, Chemistry, Physics and IT. The aim is to inspire enthusiasm for science and interest in according university studies. The new construction of the experiment laboratory on the university campus gave the institution, which has a worldwide reputation, its own separate building. The special task required very specific architecture. The inspiring and experimental approach of the XLAB institution had to be visually, spatially and structurally reflected in the architecture. Even from afar, the almost cube-shaped building is an eye-catcher due to its intense colour scheme. Each of the four disciplines, which are stacked on top of each other, were allocated an emblematic colour. Supported by four “elephant’s feet”, a prestressed-concrete grid hovers over the roof, from which the ceiling edges are suspended on thin steel cables. The suspended building enables a formally independent ground floor that serves as a foyer and event space, as well as the point-reflective rotation of the upper floors around the central atrium.
