Campus extension university

Fulda, 2016 / Purchase

The proposed development will reorganize the situation in the area of the former Heyl mill, so that the design qualities of the two listed buildings will become more noticeable. The building line along Moltkestrasse will be closed, and the new western entrance to the university campus, the only gap in the development, will come into view. The existing tower building between the riding hall and riding stables will be retained as a reminder of the mill and will contribute to the perception of the western campus entrance as a symbol visible from afar. To the south of the thoroughfare is the spatially defined campus courtyard. It provides the ensemble with an orientation-giving external spatial center. All the surrounding buildings are accessed from this center. The new and existing buildings complement each other to form a clear overall structure. With their clinker brick façades, the new buildings tie in with the tradition of the listed barracks buildings, but exercise restraint in terms of design. The buildings derive their appeal from the tactile quality of the brickwork and the careful proportioning of volumes and window openings.
