Research building for astrophysics ECAP

Erlangen, 2017 / 2nd prize

The ECAP Laboratory occupies the north-eastern corner of the campus site. A ground-floor setback creates an inviting entrance situation on the western side of the square. The offices above also face this way. On the opposite side to the east, the experimental hall is delivered from a loading zone in front of it. To the north and south, the laboratories look out onto a loosely wooded field. The structure of the building is derived directly from the functional requirements and thus has an inherent logic, which also forms the basis for the design considerations. The façade is clad with matt raw aluminum panels in a rear-ventilated construction. The trees in the surrounding area are reflected in the matt silver tone of the façade. The rational and technically precise character of the building is a symbol of its functional purpose.
